Division 11 or “Dee-one-one” took six spots in the top 15 at the 2017 Hobie 16 North American Championships that took place in Yankton South Dakota and if we adopt our northern sailors Herb and Sharon James and Nicolas and Laurence Liebel, the East coast then garnered 8 of the top 15 places. In a friendly rivalry with our West coast friends the chants of “Dee-one-one” and “Dee-two” alternated throughout the awards ceremony. The Californians took 4 of the top 15 and of course, Puerto Rico took two and Cuba, one. Not to anyone’s surprise, Enrique Figueroa and
Francesca Valdes took the top spot with their bold, all red sails and a number 1 for a sail number. Youth sailors Ben Brown and Casey Astiz finished a strong second and Mark and Grace Modderman in third. Wally Myers and Janet Payne finished in 5th and just 3 points behind them was Eric Raybon and Casey Larson (from Div 7). Greg Raybon and Nancy Kornblum were 11th, Ken Hilk and Darcy Jensen 12th and Rich and Carol McVeigh in 14th. Unfortunately, Rich and Carol were not in the picture since they were busy gathering photos and working on info to share with everyone. Congratulations for a strong representation by D11 and a big thanks to Lynn Myers who volunteered on the committee boat doing her always awesome job as timer and assistant PRO.
