On 5/6/2023, Chesapeake Hobie Cat Fleet 54 which was founded in 1972 by John Leo Flanigan, longtime sailor from Baltimore and Safety Coach for the Naval Academy, held its fiftieth regatta at the Hammerman Area of Gunpowder State Park! The Flanigan legacy is alive and well today and this regatta kicks off the sailing season every year only due to the dedication of the Flanigan family and their close friends. It’s a family affair with Lynn Flanigan working as the PRO and regatta chair, Dan Flanigan taking care of so many things including bringing multiple boats to the regatta for others to sail and their children Maggie, Jamie and Ryan doing their part. It was a Division 11 Points event and Division Championship for the Wave Fleet. Winds were from the south both days and seven races were completed. In a fleet of fourteen with many top Hobie sailors in the fleet, Jim Glanden from Newark, DE and a Fleet 54 member, won the event and the Division Championship!
In the 4 boat 14 fleet, Randy Landis coasted to podium with 6 bullets while throwing a 2nd and in the 16 fleet, Rich and Carol McVeigh took home the first place trophy.
Thirty boats participated in this year’s event and the A Cat fleet participated for the first time in 20 years due to positive changes in the Hobie Cat policies.
